Congratulations, John!  Representative John McCoy won his reelection bid with 59.8% of the vote.

Representative John McCoy is seeking his 4th term in the Washington State House of Representatives, and he is a member of the Tulalip tribe.  Before he was elected in 2002, he spent twenty years in the U.S. Air Force.  He has served as chairman of the National Caucus of Native American State Legislators, as director for Boys and Girls Club and United Way, and as a steward of the environment as vice chairman of the Select Committee on Hood Canal and a member of the Puget Sound Action Team.

With his years as a legislator, Representative McCoy has shown his commitment to ensuring opportunities for children through education and healthcare.  After hearing about the increase in child obesity and that schools were losing recess, he introduced legislation during the last session to require K-12 schools in Washington give children 30 minutes of physical activity each day.  He believes that by investing in children’s health now, we can prevent health problems in the future.

Earlier this year, Representative McCoy also introduced a bill that would expand tribal-police authority by allowing American Indian police officers to arrest a non-Indian on tribal land. He is fighting for the safety of American Indians in Indian Country and finding a way to keep reservations from becoming a safe haven for criminals.

Representative McCoy and his wife, Jeannie, have raised three daughters and have nine grandchildren.

State of the Race:
INDN’s List endorsed Representative McCoy in 2006, and we are proud to do so again!  He does not have a primary, but he has a general election opponent for November.  Representative McCoy is a progressive legislator who needs our help to win.  He is dedicated to education, to protecting tribal sovereignty, and to finding alternative energy sources. He has also been endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice Washington and the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO.
