What is the Native American Network (NAN)?
The Native American Network (NAN) is one focus of INDN’s List Education Fund for 2008. It will be an ongoing effort to build civic engagement and political power at the grassroots level in Indian Country throughout America. Registering voters and turning them out on Election Day will be a major part of NAN's efforts, but the ultimate goal of this project is to consolidate the political power garnered through the voting process and develop it into the ability to advocate for positive change in Indian Country and America on an ongoing basis.

American Indians have made strides over the past few cycles in building voting participation and political representation. Candidates and elected leaders are in turn increasingly cognizant of the value of these voters as a constituency. But more importantly, the growing influence of Indian Country is giving a voice to the too-long-neglected challenges facing today’s Indians, from poverty to inadequate healthcare to substandard housing and access to education.

NAN was founded with the idea that the challenges facing Indian Country will continue to be neglected by our political leaders until Indians become an active force in their American democracy. The momentum Indians are building in the political process make 2008 ripe for a major, sustained voter mobilization program to educate and move Indian voters to the polls. It's time we change the dynamic and begin to exercise the power we wield through the voting process and finally have our issues become an important part of the American agenda.

NAN’s first priority will be turning out the Indian Vote in the Nevada caucuses, held on January 19, 2008.
