INDN State Directors

As the only national organization dedicated to recruiting, training and supporting Native American candidates at all levels of government, INDN’s List is doing the important work of giving Indians a voice in their own destiny.

Since it’s founding on February 28th, 2005, INDN’s List has continued to soar.

We’ve recruited over 30 state directors from 25 Indian Tribes in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arizona, Navajo Nation, Colorado and California.

"I am absolutely delighted to have the support and help of our State Directors -- they are closest to their communities and are doing the work of recruiting Indians to run for office and work on campaigns," said Kalyn Free, President of INDN's List. "The caliber and esteem of our State Directors is most impressive -- these are men and women who have dedicated their careers to Indian Country. We have elected tribal leaders like Vice Chairperson Susan Arkeketa (of the Otoe-Missouria tribe), heads of important organizations, like Americans for Indian Opportunity Executive Director Laura Harris, and state elected office holders, like Washington State Representative John McCoy. I know each of our Directors will help INDN's List reach our goal of increasing the number of Indians holding public office."

As our representatives on the local level, INDN’s List State Directors come from all walks of life. They are prominent citizens, pillars of their communities and, in some cases, already elected representatives. They are our points of contact in communities great and small, seeking out talented people who will be the first generation to make Native Americans a force in the government of this country.

With featured stories in almost every major news outlet in the state and several national stories, we have achieved a rapidly escalating presence in the local and statewide press. Our first dream will be realized in October when we hold our very first INDN Campaign Camp on the Shakopee Reservation in Minnesota, where featured speakers will include such prominent individuals as Ogema Lee Sprague of the Little River Bay Band of Ottawa Indians, accomplished media consultant Dane Strother and Democratic National Committee Chairman Governor Howard Dean!

So much progress had been made since INDN’s List was a cottage industry in Kalyn’s living room and a dream in her heart! We’ve come so far in such a short time, but in order to continue our historic work, we still need the financial support of concerned, like-minded individuals like you. Sixteen people so far have joined our Warrior’s Circle by donating $1,000 or more, and many, many others have also made smaller donations. We very much appreciate all financial support, and all donations go towards supporting the critical work of getting Native American candidates elected to office.
