Carol Juneau, a member of the Hidatsa and Mandan Tribes,  views her job in the legislature much like she has viewed her other positions, one of an educator, teaching people what is wrong and what needs to be done about it.  Juneau created Browning school system’s “Stay in School” program to catch at-risk teens that are at-risk of dropping out.  She proposed legislation that would allow students to stay in high school longer and offer a GED in the classroom.  She was crucial in the passage of the “Indian Education for All” Act, which requires Montana schools to teach Indian culture and heritage in state classrooms.

Moving On

Juneau has had remarkable success in the House given the Republican-controlled climate until this past session.  When her legislation faced defeat, such as her Dropout Prevention Program, she continued working and enjoyed successes, such as the creation of a committee to study the drop-out rate among Indian students.  She has learned and adapted to the challenges of legislating as a member of the minority, and this past session in the majority, and will use that knowledge to continue educating and legislating in the Senate.

Carol faces two opponents in the General Election, one from the Constitution Party, which has a committed following in the southern part of the district, and one from an Independent.  There is no Republican in the race.  Carol Juneau is one of the most effective legislators not only in Montana, but in the entire country.  INDN’s List will do everything it can to ensure Carol wins this race in November.
