Rep. Thomas Van Norman for South Dakota House District 28A

Rep. Thomas Van Norman for South Dakota House District 28A

Representative Thomas Van Norman
Candidate for South Dakota State House
District 28A / Eagle Butte
legis.state.sd.us/sessions/2005/mbrdt362.htm

VAN NORMAN WINS WITH 60% OF THE VOTE.

A member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Tom Van Norman is a fighter for those who lack a strong voice in South Dakota government.  For the first time in the history of the state legislature the representative for district 28A, which hosts the Cheyenne River Sioux and Standing Rock Sioux reservations, is actually a tribal member.

Putting Stock in Our Future
Tom Van Norman places his priorities in the future, looking out for the health and education of South Dakota children. Believing that the state was falling short in meeting the requirements of the Indian Child Welfare Act, Van Norman took action by successfully sponsoring a bill to create an Indian Child Welfare Act Commission. He put a stop to the state’s ongoing failure in its mission to care for Indian foster children and watch over foster care.

A Persistent Voice for the People

Van Norman fights for working families across South Dakota, even in the face of staunch Republican opposition.  The senator has repeatedly fought to correct injustice by introducing a bill to investigate discriminatory treatment of Native Americans by law enforcement personnel. This and bills to expand health insurance coverage for women’s medicine and expand eligibility for the health insurance risk pool, have been killed by the Republican-dominated House. His persistence proves time and again that Van Norman’s vision for working South Dakotans fills the void left by ideological opposition on the part of Republicans in charge.

The Situation
Representative Van Norman works endlessly for working families, children, and tribes all around the state. Voters in his district recognize his hard work, but he faces tough opposition from his Republican opponent, Everett Hunt. With your support and Tom’s dedication to the people of District 28A, we know this Representative will continue to represent South Dakotans for a long time to come.
